Women’s Health Faculty Development Year

A message from the Director

Family physicians care for women throughout their lives and are well-positioned to manage them during pregnancy. They also care for their partners, regardless of gender, and their children, providing a unique role in the healthcare system. With the growing shortage of obstetric providers nationally and the increasing medical complexity of our patient population, family physicians are equipped to fill the gap in maternity care, including cesarean sections, and women's health services. For family physicians practicing in underserved, academic, and rural areas, providing family-centered maternity care services may be essential.

Our mission is to provide advanced knowledge and skills in women’s health and maternity care beyond those acquired during family medicine residency. During this fellowship, we will provide a solid foundation to hone your obstetric surgical skills and outpatient gynecological procedural skills, preparing you for an FM-OB career while serving the patients of central Florida. As junior faculty, you will also gain invaluable experience that will prepare you for a career in graduate medical education.

The lives of women and their families improve when primary care training incorporates holistic, comprehensive strategies for their care. An optimal training program in Women's Health and Family-Centered Maternity Care is best achieved in a robust multidisciplinary setting that nurtures excellence in educational innovation, clinical care, research, patient advocacy, and mentorship.

Our program is participating in a new consortium of FMOB fellowships who have agreed to not require a response from applicants to fellowship offers until October 15.

We, and other programs participating this year, may offer a fellowship spot to applicants at any time, and those applicants may accept at any time, but we will not offer that spot to another applicant until after October 15 unless the position is declined by the applicant.

Programs participating in this initiative should tell you they are doing so, but please ask if you are unsure. We also strongly encourage you, and all applicants, to notify all programs at which you interviewed when you accept a spot at any program, to ensure the process is smooth for all programs and applicants. This will also enable us to offer that spot to another applicant if you have been offered a position at your more preferred location.

As such, beginning today we will start contacting our top candidates to offer positions. We will continue to work down our rank order list through the week of October 15.

Thank you so much for your patience as we work through this new process with our FM OB Fellowship Consortium partners! We pray everyone lands where their heart desires!
