Physicians seeking to enter the U.S. to engage in graduate medical training at AdventHealth can begin their training on either an “H-1B Nonimmigrant Worker” or a “J-1 Exchange Visitor” visa category specifically carved out for Graduate Medical Training.
H-1B Specialty Occupation (Preferred)
H-1B visas are authorized through USCIS and permits temporary employment in the U.S. for foreign nationals who intend to work in a specialty occupation. To qualify as an H-1B holding Medical Resident you MUST pass all three steps of Medical Licensing Examination (USLME) prior to AdventHealth filing your H1B petition. Please note: USLME exams are only held in the United States, should you wish to sit any or all of these exams prior to your residency please plan accordingly.
H-1B visas are valid for up to three years, with the option to extend for another three (totaling 6 years). H-1B visa holders can obtain permanent residency (green card) through AdventHealth once an offer of future employment is established.
J-1 Exchange Visitor - “Physician Trainee”
J-1 Physician classification is authorized for those who intend to participate in an approved program for the purpose of receiving graduate medical education or training. ECFMG is the sole sponsor for J-1 graduate medical training designated by the U.S. Department of State. ECFMG is responsible for ensuring that Exchange Visitors and their host institutions meet the federal requirements for participation in the Exchange Visitor Program.
The J-1 Physician will automatically be subject to a strict two-year home residency requirement known as INA 212(e). The two-year home residency requirement requires the J-1 Physician to return to their home country after their residency for a minimum of two years unless the physician is selected in the Conrad 30 Waiver. The Conrad 30 waiver program allows J-1 foreign medical graduates (FMGs) to apply for a waiver of the 2-year foreign residence requirement upon completion of the J-1 exchange visitor program. See section 214(l) of the Immigration Nationality Act (INA). The program addresses the shortage of qualified doctors in medically underserved areas.
J-1 Physicians cannot apply for a H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa OR Permanent Residency until they are selected in the Conrad 30 Waiver and complete their 3 year commitment in a medically underserved area
