Welcome

On behalf of our pulmonary and critical care team, I want to thank you for considering our Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at AdventHealth Orlando. With over 1400 beds under one roof, we are one of the largest hospitals in the country and serve as the central hub of a multi-hospital system in central Florida. Our facility features 7 distinct general and specialty adult ICUs, with nearly 200 ICU beds, providing the capacity, resources, and diverse pathology to offer an exceptional training experience for our fellows.

As a fellow, you will train under our multidisciplinary group of intensivists and pulmonologists, each bringing unique expertise to the practice of pulmonary and critical care medicine. You will have the opportunity to learn from, and eventually guide, our interprofessional rounds, honing your skills in both clinical management and leadership. Additionally, you’ll play a key role in educating residents, medical students, and learners at all levels, further enriching your experience.

Our program offers a mix of elective and selective rotations, allowing you to tailor your training to your interests—whether that’s diving deeper into subspecialties like interventional pulmonology, advancing your research, or exploring other facets of critical care. Our faculty is dedicated to mentoring you and preparing you for the career you aspire to, be it in academic medicine, community practice, or a combination of both.

We are excited about the possibility of welcoming you to AdventHealth Orlando and showcasing the incredible opportunities awaiting you in our program!

Curriculum

For the pulmonary aspect of the fellowship, our program offers a wide range of clinical experiences. Along with managing the general pulmonary population served by our consultation service, fellows will have access to a diverse and specialized patient base, including those seen by subspecialists. The pulmonary transplant program provides exposure to patients undergoing advanced pulmonary disease evaluations as part of a transplant workup, as well as those receiving post-transplant care. The pulmonary hypertension service manages patients with advanced vascular and parenchymal lung diseases leading to pulmonary hypertension. Interventional pulmonology offers experience with patients who have endobronchial tumors and advanced tracheal disorders. The interstitial lung disease (ILD) service focuses on patients with suspected interstitial lung diseases. Fellows will also have access to a sleep lab, managing relevant sleep patients seen by pulmonologists and those board-certified in sleep medicine. Additionally, fellows will work with thoracic surgery patients, both pre- and post-operatively, for lung-related surgeries.

For the critical care aspect of the fellowship, in addition to the medical ICU, the program offers exposure to a variety of critically ill patients. Fellows will manage patients referred from the hepatology service in the hepatology unit. The hematology-oncology service includes patients from the hematology floors, such as those who have undergone bone marrow transplants or received aggressive chemotherapy. In the surgical ICU, fellows will collaborate with surgical intensivists to manage post-surgical critical care patients. The neuro-ICU is staffed by neurologists certified in critical care, providing fellows with exposure to neurocritical care. Fellows will also be responsible for pregnant and postpartum patients with consultation from an obstetric and maternal fetal medicine physician. Finally, the cardiac and mechanical support units allow fellows to work closely with surgeons to care for cardiac patients, including those requiring mechanical circulatory support and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
