Clinical Curriculum
Our team emphasizes teaching, mentorship, graduated levels of patient-care responsibility, and collaborative care. Our residency program curriculum provides training that will allow graduates to pursue a full-scope generalist practice with substantial exposure to all the Ob/Gyn subspecialties should they choose to pursue further training in a subspecialty. As a resident here, you will work shoulder to shoulder with our Gyn Onc fellows during your Gyn Onc rotation. In addition to working with fellows, you will work in multidisciplinary teams, regularly collaborating with nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified nurse midwives.
- Rotation Details
-
Obstetrics (PGY1 and 4)
During this 6-week rotation residents will work on Labor and Delivery. The residents will work directly with the hospitalist attendings and CNMs, as well as the Family Medicine residents, to manage all patients on the labor floor. They will manage inductions and laboring patients as well as perform vaginal deliveries, operative deliveries, cesarean deliveries and provide antepartum and postpartum care.
OB ED (PGY1 and 2)
There is one 6-week rotation in the OB ED during the 1st and 2nd year. The OBED resident performs rounds and then participates in the evaluation and management of patients that present to OB emergency department (>20 weeks gestational age). This may include rule-out labor, rupture of membranes, vaginal bleeding, evaluation of hypertension and many other presentations. The OBED resident is supervised by the hospitalist attending and CNM and will work collaboratively with the Family Medicine residents. The OBED resident may also be called to see consults in the main Emergency Department or inpatient units and assist in emergency Gyn surgeries.
Ambulatory Care (PGY1)
During this 6-week rotation, the intern will spend the majority of the time in the outpatient clinic. This will include continuity clinics focusing on general prenatal and gynecologic care, management of pregnancy of unknown location and basic gynecologic procedures (colposcopy, IUD insertion, Nexplanon insertion, endometrial biopsy). The resident will also complete an ultrasound curriculum during this rotation.
General Gynecology (PGY1, 3, and 4)
During this rotation, the GYN residents focus on inpatient management of benign gynecology complaints as well as pre- and post-operative care. The GYN residents will see inpatient and ED consults and perform emergent GYN surgeries with the hospitalist attendings. They will also perform elective GYN surgery with the AdventHealth Medical Group Orlando Ob/Gyn generalists. Each resident will have their own continuity clinic as well as specific clinics for GYN procedures and peri-operative care.
Minimally Invasive Gyn Surgery (PGY3)
During this 6 week rotation, the MIGS resident will focus on improving their laparoscopy and robotic surgery skills. They will perform surgery with various AdventHealth ObGyn physicians, both in the surgery center and main operating rooms. They will learn to evaluate and manage complex gynecologic problems including abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and chronic pelvic pain.
Night Float
Night float will occur from Sunday night through Thursday night allowing the residents to attend didactics on Friday mornings. During this rotation, the residents will be responsible for coverage of Labor and Delivery, the OBED, consults in the main ED, emergency Gyn surgeries and the inpatient services.
Maternal Fetal Medicine
The residents on the MFM service will work together to manage the patients admitted to the Perinatal High-Risk Unit (PHRU) service with the Maternal Fetal Medicine attending. They will alternate attending MFM clinic and become comfortable with the medical comorbidities of pregnancy all while enhancing their skills in OB ultrasound.
Reproductive Endocrinology
In the 3rd year, residents will spend time at Brown Fertility where they will learn how to evaluate women with endocrine and fertility disorders. The resident will participate in procedures such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), egg retrievals, and intrauterine insemination. They will also spend time observing procedures like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in the embryology lab.
Family Planning
The family planning resident will have advanced instruction in contraceptive care and management of abnormal pregnancies. There is also an opportunity to perform pregnancy options counseling as well as first and second trimester dilation and curettage/evacuation.
Urogynecology
During both the 3rd and 4th year, there is a 6 week rotation with the AdventHealth Female Pelvic Medicine and Reproductive surgeons. This will include mastering the basics of pelvic floor anatomy as well as conservative and surgical management of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. Residents will perform hysterectomies and assist with suspension procedures and vaginal repairs.
Gynecologic Oncology
Residents will rotate on the Gyn Oncology service during their 2nd and 4th year. Residents will see patients in oncology clinic and will manage the inpatient service with the Gyn Oncology Fellows. They will also perform and assist in the oncology operating room, performing laparoscopic, robotic and abdominal surgeries. They will attend conferences and tumor board with the Gyn Oncology Fellows.

Research
Over the course of training, residents will be expected to take part in a quality improvement project and an original research project. These projects will be presented at the departmental conference at the end of the academic year as well as the AdventHealth Orlando GME Resident Research Day.
The purpose of a quality improvement project is to engage in the department’s efforts to improve patient care and identify systems issues that may contribute to patient outcomes. In addition, this project should foster interprofessional collaboration with other healthcare team members.
The original research project should be completed by the end of the 3rd year. This project will teach the basic principles of research including how research is conducted, evaluated and applied to patient care. The goal is for the research project to be submitted to a clinical meeting and/or a peer-reviewed journal.
