Our Process
Epilepsy is called “intractable” or “drug resistant” when a child has not responded to anti-seizure medications at a therapeutic level. That’s where we come in.
We treat the whole child – body, mind and spirit – going beyond the basics of “seizure counts” to find effective, lasting, non-surgical and surgical epilepsy treatments to greatly reduce or even eliminate seizures.
Our specially designed eight-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit allows our team of pediatric epilepsy experts to observe your child in real time, using the latest digital diagnostic equipment to assess, diagnose and treat your child’s epilepsy.
As a nationally recognized TSC clinic, AdventHealth for Children provides comprehensive care to kids diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, a genetic disorder that can trigger seizures, developmental delay and intellectual disability.
The most exciting advancement in neuroimaging in decades, magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive procedure that tracks moment-to-moment brain activity allowing pediatric neurology specialists to pinpoint the areas of the brain responsible for abnormal activity.
From 30 seizures a day to seizure-free: How neurologists treated little girl’s rare syndrome
The Ahn family was turned upside down when their daughter Faith suddenly started having 30 seizures a day following a bout with the flu.
At AdventHealth for Children, epileptologist Ki Hyeong Lee, MD, MS, diagnosed her with febrile-infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES). This rare and potentially fatal seizure disorder only affects 1 in a million children. With that many seizure events a day, the sooner they’re addressed, the better the outcome. So, Dr. Lee turned to an unorthodox treatment.
Faith’s dad said, “It felt like a miracle.” Today, Faith is seizure free.
Cora was growing and thriving like any other child her age until she began falling to the ground unexpectedly. After a trip to the AdventHealth for Children ER for an evaluation, the family was faced with an epilepsy diagnosis and their lives were changed forever. Realizing that medication was not enough to help Cora be seizure free, the next step in her care was surgical intervention. Trusting the experienced and world-class team of pediatric neurosurgeons and epileptologists, Cora bravely underwent surgery. Watch this awe-inspiring story that combines a family's hope with innovative pediatric care to transform a young girl's medical diagnosis and help her lead the life she deserves.
Joscelyn was just a baby when she began having seizures. Her family was faced with an unimaginable question: Should they allow doctors to perform a complete hemispherectomy, which would essentially remove half her brain? Learn more about this amazing, lifesaving surgery and Joscelyn’s remarkable journey to becoming seizure-free.
