Regain the Strength To Live the Life You Love

You love to approach each day with strength and confidence. At AdventHealth Tampa we’re here to help you regain your vibrant, independent life. We offer outpatient rehabilitative services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. We also have a comprehensive in-patient rehabilitation unit that’s fully certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Our in-patient unit features Independence Square, a one-of-a-kind physical rehabilitation area that models several real-life environments so you can work on the skills you use in everyday life — like getting around your apartment, visiting the grocery store or pharmacy, and navigating curbs and uneven sidewalks. In both in-patient and outpatient settings, you work with a team of highly skilled physicians, physical therapists, rehab specialists, and speech therapists to create a treatment plan that’s right for you. We work hard to help you regain freedom in body, mind, and spirit.

We’re here to help you find the right physician or a location that’s convenient for you.

The Pelvic Floor is a group of muscles that are at the bottom of the pelvis. They support all the organs inside, they help with sexual function and help maintain continence of the bowels and bladder. I definitely strive to make all my patients feel comfortable and safe. One thing I generally do is an internal exam and an external exam if they are comfortable with it. So that allows me to see what is the coordination of the muscles, what is the patient's awareness of the muscles. What is their strength, what is their endurance just like you would with any other muscle in the body. Is there pain, is there tightness associated with those muscles. The interventions would be just like you would see in general orthopedic physical therapy where you would have a knee or hip injury and you are going to go and have exercise. We do a lot of exercise, we do a lot of postural correction. Depending on the diagnosis if we have pain, some of it is a lot of relaxation techniques, it's manual therapy, it's teaching someone how to breath correctly. Simply how to stand and sit correctly - posture.

Oncology patients sometimes have some very specific needs that can be addressed by physical therapy. One of the most common ones is patients get very significant cancer related fatigue. We work on activities for daily living and promoting independence and if we can't get full independence we look at compensation techniques and if there's adaptive equipment that can be used. Another side effect of oncology and cancer treatment is patients can get significant fibrosis and scarring secondary to radiation treatment. In our department we use some very specific techniques. Massage techniques, we use cupping and we use taping to directly address the scar tissue that forms secondary to treatment and surgery and the fibrosis that can occur from prolonged inflammation. And these techniques can also be applicable to patients with vascular disease and other conditions that cause excessive scarring. The result is that we get better tissue, the limb moves better, their mobility improves and their discomfort and pain is less and significant.

There are multiple conditions that can cause Lymphedema. The primary condition that we see here is secondary to cancer treatment either surgery biopsy or radiation therapy. Other conditions that can cause lymphedema are peripheral vascular disease and obesity. So therapy can help alleviate lymphedema using a multi-faceted approach. We do a full assessment and evaluation. Based on our finding we come up with an individualized plan of care that will consist of complete decongestive therapy. That will be a very specific massage to reroute the fluid so that you can get drainage and improve circulation. We will follow that with compression to make sure the fluid does not reaccumulate in the limb. We will also send you home with a home exercise program. The home exercise program consists of a self massage and positioning to keep the fluid from reaccumulating and facilitate drainage. We also have you do self massage again to reinforce what we've done in the clinic and to make you independent long term with your own management of your symptoms.
