CIE

The Center for Interventional Endoscopy (CIE) is home to a team of exceptional interventional gastroenterologists using the latest advances in diagnostic and minimally invasive therapeutic modalities in managing a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases, ranging from motility disorders, pancreaticobiliary diseases to endoscopic resection of gastrointestinal pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions, as well as Bariatric Endoscopy.

To date, CIE at AdventHealth Tampa is the first and only interventional endoscopy center providing exceptional patient care in the Tampa Bay region, like its counterpart in Orlando. Quality, research, knowledge generation and innovation are at the center of the AdventHealth Tampa CIE, and this work enables the team to provide excellent clinical care for our patients. CIE physicians are providing outstanding patient care by practicing evidence-based medicine and utilizing cutting-edge endoscopic techniques, unique to individual patient’s needs.

“Since starting my career in Gastroenterology, I’ve witnessed firsthand how these therapeutic endoscopic procedures have transformed patient care,” said Dr. Hafiz Muzaffar Akbar Khan, MD, Medical Director of the Center for Interventional Endoscopy at AdventHealth Tampa. "At CIE, our core mission is providing compassionate, whole patient care, utilizing multidisciplinary approach, that best fits our patient’s needs and preferences. Minimally invasive endoscopic procedures are an excellent alternative to complex surgeries with their proven safety, efficacy and organ preserving properties."

Endoscopy is Evolving

Endoscopy has been transformed from a diagnostic to a therapeutic modality over the last two decades, with its ability to provide safe, highly effective and least invasive treatment options for a variety of complex digestive disorders, that would otherwise need major surgery.

The Center for Interventional Endoscopy (CIE) at AdventHealth Tampa is the premiere destination center for providing complex GI care to the Tampa Bay region and beyond. The center offers a variety of advanced endoscopic procedures such as:

  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
  • Complex Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic Resection of precancerous and cancerous lesions utilizing endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), Full Thickness Resection (FTR) techniques.

The center also specializes in treating a variety of Motility disorders including Achalasia, Gastroparesis and Zenker’ diverticulum by performing Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). CIE physicians work in close collaboration with surgeons at AdventHealth Tampa/West Florida Division to provide least invasive endoscopic treatment options for GERD by performing Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) and Bariatric Endoscopy like Transoral Outlet Reduction (TORe) and Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG).

The ultimate goal is to develop best practice techniques to achieve optimal patient care while minimizing unnecessary health care utilization. With these interventional endoscopic procedures, patients recover faster, often with same day discharge, and a quicker recovery and return to work.
