AdventHealth Tampa is setting a higher standard for patient care with the adoption of a new imaging technology for breast cancer surgery.

The hospital recently became the first in Florida to use Clarix Imaging technology in the fight against breast cancer. The product — the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved True 3D VSI-360™ — is a mobile CT machine that scans cancer tissue specimens in the operating room and displays 3D images in real time, allowing surgeons to precisely identify the boundary between a cancerous tumor and healthy tissue.

“This technology gives surgeons and radiologists unprecedented clarity for visualizing margins during breast cancer surgeries like lumpectomy,” says John Cox, MD, Medical Director of Breast Surgery at AdventHealth Tampa. “Ultimately, this will keep more women from needing to come back for a second surgery to remove more tissue.”

The VSI-360 provides a true 3D image reconstruction of a tissue specimen, allowing doctors to view high-resolution tissue slices more precisely, without overlapping tissue obscuring the margins.

“I have never seen clarity like this in surgery before,” Dr. Cox says. “It gives us information that I’d not seen in any other piece of equipment. I believe very strongly that this is going to improve the outcomes for breast cancer patients and breast conservation surgery.”

“Patients should be seeking out doctors who are using technology to the advantage of their care,” he says. “We are doing that here at AdventHealth Tampa.”
