Urgent Care or ER: When To Head to the Closest Emergency Room

When the unexpected happens, it’s easy to feel shaken. AdventHealth Zephyrhills, formerly Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, is here to help you understand when to head to your local Urgent Care center and when to head to your closest ER. If you’re faced with sudden pain that comes out of nowhere, severe burns, poisoning, broken bones, stroke, or anything else you think could be life-threatening, play it safe. Call 911 immediately to be taken to the nearest emergency room if you experience any of the following:

• Complicated Fractures
• Deep Wounds
• Extreme Difficulty Breathing
• Major Head Injury
• Poisoning
• Severe Allergic Reactions
• Severe Burns
• Suspected Heart Attack
• Suspected Stroke
• Vomiting or Coughing Up Blood

Sometimes heart attacks can be hard to identify. If you experience chest discomfort, pain in your upper body, shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness, be safe and call 911 immediately. When you get to our Zephyrhills ER, our Chest Pain Center will be open and our Emergency Care team is trained in rapid emergency treatment of heart attacks.

In our 24-hour emergency room, you can also receive care for bronchitis, migraine headaches, and severe abdominal pain. No matter what you’re facing, we’re here to help bring healing and peace of mind to you and your loved ones.

What to Expect When You Visit the Zephyrhills ER

An emergency can be unnerving and confusing. We know you have lots of questions and our calm, knowledgeable emergency room staff members are here to answer every single one patiently and thoughtfully. We’ll have a few questions for you, too. We’ll ask for some basic information like your medical history and the reason for your visit. We’ll also check your vital signs so we can decide how best to help you moving forward.

To prepare for an emergency situation, you may want to consider keeping an information card with you at all times, perhaps in your wallet or purse. Helpful information includes the name of your primary care physician, a list of your medications and drug allergies, and advanced directives like power of attorney or health care proxy. The more information we have, the better, and faster, we can serve you.

Because we want to give you the fastest, best care possible, we use a process known as triage to help us determine the order in which we treat patients in the ER. This means someone suffering from suspected stroke may receive care before someone not in a critical condition, even if that person arrived earlier. We do all we can to keep emergency room wait times as short as possible for everyone. You can trust that we’re fully committed to your care, and that our specialized, experienced team will do all they can to help bring you fast, efficient emergency medical treatments.

Not all conditions require a trip to the nearest emergency room. When you need care for a minor ailment like hives or flu, you can visit one of our local Urgent Care centers. With around-the-clock hours and a highly skilled team of medical specialists, we’re ready to help you find relief from a range of illnesses and injuries, including:
