Types of Heart Failure: Heart failure is a sign that your heart can no longer pump blood correctly. In diastolic heart failure, the heart’s chambers become thick and stiff, which makes it more difficult for blood to flow in. In systolic heart failure, the chambers become thin and stretched, making it more difficult for the heart to pump. A third type of heart failure, congestive heart failure, occurs when blood flowing into the heart backs up and causes congestion.
