Merriam, KS – In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission will offer 3D mammograms for $30 throughout October 2019. This limited-time pricing will make it affordable for women who may not be covered by insurance to receive preventive screening. Annual mammograms are recommended for all women beginning at age 40, and earlier for women with higher than average risk of breast cancer.

“Every October we see a sea of pink to remind us that early detection for breast cancer saves lives,” said Bettina Lowe, MD, Medical Director of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission NAPBC Breast Program. “This year it was important to us at AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission that we went beyond pink in celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month to really make an impact on women’s health in Kansas City.”

For women whose mammograms are covered by insurance, they can also choose to donate $30 to the Women’s Services fund at AdventHealth Foundation Shawnee Mission to support vital health care services – including mammograms – for underserved women in the community.

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission uses the most advanced tools in digital mammography, including 3D mammography and computer-aided detection. These tools allow imaging specialists to detect subtle differences between tissues and pinpoint areas of concern — well before they can be detected by touch.

The $30 3D mammograms are offered at three locations in Johnson County: AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, AdventHealth Imaging Lenexa and AdventHealth Women’s Imaging Overland Park. To schedule an appointment or for more information, visit KCMammograms.com.

Also beginning in October, AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission radiologists will begin using a Magseed magnetic marker for most breast cancer patients rather than the traditional wire marker. Magseed marker is a small radiation-free, stainless-steel seed that pinpoints abnormal tissue and allows physicians to better target this tissue during breast cancer surgeries.

“Implementing the Magseed technology at our Cancer Center is a commitment to continually providing advanced treatment options for our breast cancer patients,” said Dr. Lowe. “This provides less discomfort and better outcomes for our patients, and we’re honored to begin offering it in the month of October, when we are celebrating breast cancer survivors.”

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission will also honor breast cancer survivors in October in partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing at the Kansas Speedway on Oct. 20, 2019. Former NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kurt Busch will drive the No. 1 AdventHealth car accented in pink and inscribed with the name of a local breast cancer survivor.
