Also known as gastric sleeve surgery, this procedure removes up to 80% of the stomach and can lead to rapid weight loss. The gastric sleeve has become a popular option since it doesn’t involve bypassing the small intestine and has a low rate of long-term complications. It is also still fairly effective at improving or potentially resolving type 2 diabetes for many patients.

Sleeve gastrectomy can be performed laparoscopically (minimally invasively) resulting in less pain and scarring, and a faster recovery time, than traditional surgery.

You can expect significant weight loss from the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which is designed to make your stomach much smaller. By enabling food to bypass much of the stomach and part of the small intestine, you’ll find yourself getting full more quickly, with less desire to eat, helping you keep the weight off for years to come.

This surgery removes most of the stomach and changes your small intestine to reduce how much fat it can absorb. Many patients can lose more weight with the duodenal switch than with the gastric bypass or the sleeve gastrectomy, but would be at higher risk of developing nutritional deficiencies afterward. This procedure may be recommended only if you are severely obese.

The single anastomosis duodenal switch (SADI), or simplified duodenal switch, is a minimally invasive bariatric surgery. The SADI procedure combines a gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, but unlike the duodenal switch, this modification only has one connection instead of two and bypasses less of the small bowel to minimize complications. Patients get the benefit of both procedures to experience better weight loss outcomes and resolution of medical problems without as many long-term side effects.

The SADI procedure is mainly used for patients with a high BMI or significant medical comorbidities, but it’s also a safe and effective option for people who’ve had a sleeve gastrectomy in the past and need a surgical revision for weight or medical comorbidities.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

An endoscope is used to suture (stitch) the stomach from the inside, with no cuts or incisions, to reduce the size of the stomach. As a result, it’ll take less food to help you feel fuller faster and stay full for longer. This results in significant weight loss of up to 20% of your total body weight.

Endoscopic Balloon Therapy

An endoscope is used to place a soft balloon that is filled with liquid into the stomach. The balloon occupies space in the stomach, resulting in your stomach not being able to hold as much food and you feeling full faster. The balloon is typically removed endoscopically within six to eight months after it is placed. Most patients will lose 30 to 50 pounds within three months of the balloon placement. The balloon can be removed at any time and does not change the shape of the stomach.
