UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale and La Grange hospitals have again achieved Magnet recognition, the nation’s highest honor for nursing excellence and quality patient care. This is the third designation for Hinsdale and the second for La Grange, a distinction held by only 10% of hospitals nationwide.
Awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Magnet recognition reflects the hospitals’ unwavering commitment to superior nursing, patient outcomes, and continuous innovation in care. Fewer than 630 hospitals nationwide currently hold this elite status. The Hinsdale and La Grange hospitals were notified of the achievement on Wednesday, June 25. The hospitals also received 5 exemplars with their Magnet re-designation.
“This honor reflects the relentless dedication of our nurses and care teams to deliver exceptional care every day,” said Andrea Miller, chief nursing officer for UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale. “Magnet isn’t just a credential — it’s a testament to our culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. It reinforces to our patients, their families, and our community that they can trust us to provide the highest standard of care.”
Only 629 U.S. health care organizations out of over 6,000 U.S. hospitals have achieved Magnet recognition. Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
“Magnet recognition reflects the heart of our mission — delivering whole-person, compassionate care,” said Trisha Musich, regional chief nursing officer for UChicago Medicine AdventHealth. “It’s a testament to the dedication, skill, and calling of every nurse and caregiver. This honor not only recognizes excellence in clinical care but also affirms our commitment to nurturing the body, mind, and spirit of every person we serve.”
To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
Health care organizations must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on adherence to Magnet concepts and demonstrated improvements in patient care and quality. An organization reapplying for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence to demonstrate how staff members sustained and improved Magnet concepts, performance and quality over the four-year period since the organization received its most recent recognition.
