Much more than mobility: Reaching life goals following joint replacement

Tim and family

Joint replacement can be more than just a path to regaining basic mobility, it can be the gateway to reclaiming an active, adventurous, and fulfilling life. For patients like Tim Schmieding, the expertise and encouragement of Dr. Todd Miner and his team at AdventHealth Medical Group Colorado Joint Replacement at Porter made all the difference in achieving life milestones after surgery.

Tim Schmieding’s battle with arthritis began in his early twenties, a frustrating diagnosis for such a young and athletic person. For years, he managed his pain with cortisone and lubrication injections, but as time passed, Tim’s mobility decreased, his pain intensified, and weight gain made staying active even harder.

By his early forties, Tim realized he needed a better solution for his arthritis pain. He began consulting with Dr. Todd Miner, with the hope that surgery could return him to the sports and challenges he loved. “I didn’t want to just get up and walk after my surgery. I wanted to compete and meet my long-term goals…and Dr. Miner insisted this was possible.”

In August 2017, Dr. Miner performed Tim’s total knee replacement. While the rehabilitation process was demanding, the results were transformative. Tim not only resumed hiking, cycling, and playing pickleball with his wife, he exceeded even his own expectations. In 2019, Tim accomplished a lifelong dream of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, finishing a day ahead of schedule and passing other climbers along the way. “I had so much strength and confidence in my knee that I didn’t even know I had. I just kept going.” He continued to push his limits, including hiking a portion of the challenging Inca Trail in Peru’s Andes mountains.

Tim’s story demonstrates that joint replacement can restore more than movement; it can revive an individual’s ability to thrive, compete, and set new goals.
