Team members on the labor and delivery unit at AdventHealth Winter Park came together to create a moment of pure joy for one of their own. When Sheila Williams, a beloved housekeeper on the unit, shared she was getting married, a group of nurses quickly sprang into action, surprising her with a heartfelt bridal shower right in one of the patient rooms she helps care for every day.
Nurse Hannah Heisdorf captured the moment on video and posted it to her TikTok account. Within days, the video went viral, gaining more than 6 million views and over 1 million likes. Strangers flooded the comments with love and congratulations for Sheila, while major brands – including Hilton, Delta Air Lines and Tarte Cosmetics – offered gifts and donations to help Sheila and her husband celebrate their marriage.
The story touched so many that it caught the attention of NBC Nightly News, where Hannah and fellow nurse Cayla Lightbody shared what inspired the celebration. Their story aired on the “There’s Good News Tonight” segment, bringing national attention to this incredible act of kindness. Click here to watch.
Sheila married her husband, Terry, on Friday, July 25, in Orlando. We sat down with Sheila, Hannah, and Cayla to hear more about the surprise that started it all, and why it meant so much.
Q&A with Sheila Williams, housekeeper at AdventHealth Winter Park
How did the team surprise you?
I was told there was a spill in one of the patient rooms. One of the nurses said, “There’s water everywhere. Can you come get it up?” I said OK.
I went in there, and I couldn’t believe what I saw. I was breathless. No one has ever done anything like that for me.
They said, “Surprise!” and I said, “For me?” They said, “Yes, this is for you!” The table and decorations were so beautiful.
How long have you worked at AdventHealth, and what has this unit meant to you?
I’ve been with AdventHealth for more than seven years, but I’ve only been on this unit for just over a month. That’s why it was so touching. These ladies – these nurses – are wonderful. It’s all about teamwork here. We keep our babies safe, we keep our mothers and patients safe, and we keep each other safe. There is a lot of love on this unit.
How did the experience make you feel?
It was the happiest day of my life. I’ve never experienced anything like that before. I’m 62 years old and have never been anywhere. I’ve been in Florida all my life. Hilton offered me a trip, and Terry and I are going to New York City! I’ve always wanted to go to Manhattan.
Is that your honeymoon trip?
We went to Tampa right after the wedding. We spent the weekend on the bay and had dinner on a boat. It was beautiful. And now, New York will be the big honeymoon. I’m so excited. I never thought this would happen.
What do you love most about your job and team?
I’m so happy to be part of AdventHealth – not because of what happened, but because I love this place. I love my job. I’m a housekeeper, but I’m a good housekeeper. It’s not just about doing my job – it’s about interacting with our patients.
I like making people happy and giving advice. The best thing you can give somebody is love and the Lord.
What do you think of all the attention this story has received?
I don’t know what to say! Is it real? I had my husband pinch me to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.
This is something I’ve been praying for all my life – for years, I asked God to bless me with a good husband. Now, at 62, I got married to Terry, who is 70. Before getting married, we’d been together for over 14 years.
Why do you think your story is resonating with so many people?
I think it’s my age and the kind of person I am. My reaction was so real. They were keeping it from me all day – I had no idea what was going on. It truly was a surprise.
Any final thoughts?
This unit is special. We take care of the babies, we take care of the mothers, and we take care of each other. It’s great here. I look forward to coming to this place every day, and I’m never tired.
Q&A with AdventHealth Winter Park registered nurses Hannah Heisdorf and Cayla Lightbody
What made you want to throw the bridal shower for Sheila?
We had a group of people who helped and participated. We love Ms. Sheila. She is such a joy to us on our unit. She comes in every single day with a smiling face. We are very blessed to have her. We wanted to give her something to celebrate this monumental moment in her life.
How did you find out she was getting married?
We found out just a few days before the shower. We threw it together in a couple of days. A lot of us weren’t even scheduled to work that day and came in on our days off to make it happen.
Why do you think the story has struck such a chord with people?
A lot of the feedback we’re getting is that people are finding hope again in humanity. Just to see people care and give to others. These are complete strangers donating what they can to ensure Sheila has the honeymoon of her dreams. Also, girls supporting girls!
This act of love and kindness became a global example of AdventHealth’s mission at work – ensuring every team member and patient feels whole. For Sheila, it was more than a moment – it was a memory of a lifetime.
