UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook has officially opened its new Fast Track Emergency Department. This innovative service is designed to streamline care for patients with less urgent needs — like minor injuries, mild infections or simple procedures.
Fast Track is located at the front end of the Emergency Department, helping separate low-acuity patients from those with more serious needs. Mid-level providers (physician assistants and nurse practitioners) are stationed in the area to ensure timely, focused care, with a goal of initiating patient communication within 15 minutes of arrival. Hospital leaders estimate that the new process may result in a 20–30% reduction in Emergency Department length of stay, along with faster time-to-provider.
The Bolingbrook Emergency Department sees approximately 36,000 visits per year. It is a Level II Trauma Center with 22 private rooms, including 2 trauma bays. The addition of Fast Track expands the department’s capacity to manage varying levels of patient need while maintaining safe and timely care.
“We know that many patients come to us during their most scared and vulnerable moments,” said Kenneth Rose, president and CEO of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook. “By seeing them more quickly, we can offer comfort and reassurance when it matters most. For those with lower-acuity needs, Fast Track means they can get the care they need efficiently without compromising the exceptional experience they’ve come to expect from us. It’s one more way we’re continuing to meet the needs of our community.”
