Dr. Arnold Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month, and Dr. Paul Arnold, a urologist with AdventHealth Medical Group, recently highlighted the importance of prostate exams during a recent appearance on ABC Action News.
Dr. Arnold emphasized the importance of early detection through screenings. Prostate cancer is the second-most detected cancer in men, with about 35,000 dying every year. That’s where screenings and early detection can make a difference. Regular screenings can help identify prostate cancer at its earliest stages when it’s most treatable.
Dr. Arnold says that while most men should start talking to their doctors about prostate exams at the age of 50, there are certain circumstances where you will start screening earlier. The screenings include a digital rectal exam by a licensed professional and lab test called the PSA.
Dr. Arnold told ABC Action News, “My only advice to men is to listen to their bodies. If they hear or feel something different, especially in their urinary system, then they should have an open and honest discussion with their doctor."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men should make sure to speak with their doctor if they are experiencing:
- Frequent urination
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Weak urine flow
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Persistent pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis
However, it's critical to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation because these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions.
Paul Arnold, MD, FACS, is a highly experienced board-certified urologist. After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Arnold received his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He went on to complete a surgery and urology residency at The Ohio State University. He is currently accepting new patients.
