More than 100 local leaders, clinicians and community partners gathered for AdventHealth Daytona Beach’s first State of the Hospital address for a look at how the hospital is evolving to meet the region’s fast-growing and complex health care needs.
Hosted by the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Foundation, the event reflected the hospital’s recent growth and laid out a vision for what’s ahead. The theme of the event — “Here. When it matters most.” — underscored the hospital’s focus on expanding access, advancing care through innovation, and remaining a steadfast partner to patients and the community.
“Today, we are showing our community the possibilities ahead,” said Nika Hosseini, chair of the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Foundation. “We’re building a future where every person has access to care that’s not just close to home, but exceptional in every way.”
That future is already taking shape. The hospital is in the midst of a $220 million expansion that will increase its inpatient bed count from 362 to 466 and expand the number of surgical suites from 18 to 22. Once completed in 2026, the campus will total nearly one million square feet — making it one of the largest health care footprints in the region.
Dr. David Sinclair, president and CEO of AdventHealth Daytona Beach, who stepped into the role earlier this year, said the expansion reflects both rising demand and rising expectations.
“Our community is growing — and fast,” he said. “We’re making sure our care grows with it. That means more access to top physicians, more innovation, and more resources — all rooted in the promise to care for people as whole individuals: body, mind and spirit.”
Sinclair emphasized that the organization’s commitment goes well beyond infrastructure.
Last year alone, AdventHealth brought nearly 80 new physicians and advanced practitioners to Volusia County. They’re part of AdventHealth Medical Group — a network of 450 providers across 75 locations in Flagler, Lake, Sumter and Volusia counties — who collectively cared for more than one million patients in 2024.
Throughout the event, hospital leaders and physicians shared how innovation is transforming care for local patients.
One of the most powerful examples came from Dr. Patrick Mangonon, an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon performing both robotic heart and lung procedures at AdventHealth Daytona Beach. He explained how minimally invasive surgery is improving recovery and outcomes for patients with serious heart conditions.
To date, Mangonon has performed nearly 700 robotic-assisted heart and lung surgeries using the hospital’s da Vinci surgical system, which allows for smaller incisions and greater precision. He was also the first surgeon in Florida to use the robotic platform to treat long-standing atrial fibrillation — a chronic irregular heartbeat — by targeting the areas of the heart that cause abnormal electrical signals.
“Twenty years ago, we’d treat many of these conditions with open chest surgery,” Mangonon told attendees. “Now we can do it with a few small incisions, minimal pain and a much shorter recovery.”
The hospital is also the only facility in the area using the Intuitive Ion Endoluminal System — a robotic platform that reaches deep into the lungs to safely collect tissue samples, offering a far more precise way to detect cancer in its earliest stages.
The conversation on innovation continued with Dr. Erinc Akture, an interventional neurosurgeon who detailed the hospital’s advanced stroke program.
Thanks to 24/7 access to interventional neuroradiology (INR), AdventHealth Daytona Beach is one of the few hospitals in the area that can perform thrombectomy — a lifesaving stroke procedure — up to 24 hours after symptoms begin.
“When it comes to stroke, every minute matters,” Akture said. “We are using advanced technology to give patients a second chance at life.”
That same precision and speed also defines the hospital’s approach to cancer treatment.
With the introduction of the Ethos™ adaptive radiation therapy system, physicians can now adjust treatment plans daily, based on real-time changes in a patient’s anatomy.
“Cancer doesn’t wait — and neither do we,” said radiation oncologist Dr. Shiv Desai. “We can fine-tune each dose to match the patient’s body that day. It’s like tailoring a suit, but for radiation therapy. The fit is exact and the outcome is safer, more accurate, and more personal.”
Beyond clinical innovation, the event also highlighted the impact of giving and how generous supporters are helping reimagine care.
Hosseini announced a major philanthropic initiative on the horizon to fund a new Women’s Operating Room — a dedicated space designed with privacy, dignity and specialized care in mind.
“Together, we can make this vision a reality,” she said. “This project is for our mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers. With community support, we will expand our ability to care for women at every stage of life—right here at home.”
Throughout the event, a clear message emerged: growth at AdventHealth Daytona Beach isn’t about getting bigger — it’s about getting better. It’s about meeting people where they are and making sure they never have to leave the community for world-class care.
“As a nonprofit health system, the dollars we earn are reinvested right back to the community,” Sinclair said. “We’re not here for the short term; we’re building a healthier future for the next generation.” To learn more, visit https://www.adventhealth.com/hospital/adventhealth-daytona-beach.
