AdventHealth Avista has reached a new milestone in surgical innovation with the successful completion of its first endoscopic spine surgery, performed by board-eligible neurosurgeon Dr. Chris Talbot. This groundbreaking procedure marks a significant advancement in minimally invasive spine care for patients across Colorado.
Precision through a keyhole
Unlike traditional spine surgeries that require larger incisions and significant muscle disruption, endoscopic spine surgery offers a transformative approach. “The biggest difference is how we access the spine and how much tissue we disturb getting there,” explains Dr. Talbot. “With endoscopic surgery, I’m working through an incision smaller than a centimeter, about the size of your pinky fingernail.”
Using a 4K ultra high-definition endoscopic system, Dr. Talbot visualizes and treats compressed nerves or herniated discs with remarkable precision. Specialized instruments and articulating drills allow him to navigate around corners and preserve critical structures like muscles, ligaments, and tendons. “Those tissues are essential for long-term stability and function,” he adds. “Preserving them means patients recover faster and do better over time.”
Remarkable recovery and safety benefits
Patients undergoing endoscopic spine surgery at Avista can expect a dramatically improved recovery experience. “Most go home the same day or after just an overnight stay,” says Dr. Talbot. “Postoperative pain is significantly less, studies show up to a 50% reduction compared to open surgery. Many patients are walking comfortably within hours and returning to daily activities within days instead of weeks.”
The procedure also boasts a substantially lower infection risk - up to 16 times less than conventional approaches. However, Dr. Talbot emphasizes that careful patient selection is key: “Not everyone is a candidate. I spend time understanding each patient’s symptoms, imaging, and goals to ensure the right procedure at the right time.”
Team-based preparation and cutting-edge technology
Bringing this advanced technique to AdventHealth Avista required extensive preparation. Dr. Talbot trained under internationally recognized leaders in endoscopic spine surgery during his fellowship at Emory University, participating in more than 40 cases across the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine.
The hospital’s multidisciplinary team including anesthesia, OR staff, and nursing - underwent specialized training in equipment setup, monitored anesthesia protocols, and same-day discharge pathways. “It really takes an entire team working together,” he says. “We’ve been deliberate and methodical in our preparation because patient safety is paramount.”
Expanding options for Colorado patients
With this new capability, AdventHealth Avista continues to be a leader in spine care innovation. “Colorado residents value staying active and getting outdoors,” notes Dr. Talbot. “This technique supports that lifestyle. It’s also ideal for elderly patients or those with medical conditions who need a safer, less invasive approach.”
By pioneering advanced endoscopic spine surgery in Colorado, AdventHealth Avista is setting the standard for excellence in patient care. “Spine care is complex and nuanced,” Dr. Talbot reflects. “My goal is to solve each patient’s problem with the least invasive approach that will actually work for their specific situation.”
