Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke

When it comes to strokes, it’s important to call 911 right away. It’s also important to be informed. When you understand stroke symptoms, you can be better prepared and empowered to recognize when you or a loved one need help. There are a few types of strokes, including:

  • Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures.
  • Ischemic stroke is the most common type and happens when a clot blocks a vessel supplying blood to the brain.
  • Transient ischemic stroke, also called a “mini-stroke,” is a short episode of stroke symptoms that does not cause permanent damage but can lead to serious future strokes.

If you or a loved one experience symptoms of stroke like paralysis, numbness, dizziness, or confusion, stay calm and seek help. Use the letters in the word "F.A.S.T." to quickly identify stroke symptoms. The acronym stands for:

  • Face Drooping
  • Arm Weakness
  • Speech Difficulty
  • Time to Call 911
