Osteoporosis Prevention for Lifelong Bone Health

Your bone tissue is growing and changing every day, just like all the other cells in your body. The amount of bone cells and tissue you have is known as bone mass or bone density, and the higher your bone density, the stronger your bones.

Bone density naturally diminishes during the aging process, especially for women. And low bone density can lead to a serious condition called osteoporosis, which causes your bones to become thin and fragile. If you have osteoporosis, you may have bone pain and be at a much higher risk for fractures.

Though some osteoporosis risks are uncontrollable (like your age and ethnicity), there are steps you can take to protect your bones for a lifetime. Our orthopedic team has designed an osteoporosis program to help older adults stay strong and active as they age.

If you’re concerned about your bone health or are age 65+, finding out how strong your bones are can be as simple as a painless test (like a DEXA scan) at your doctor’s office. To schedule an appointment with an orthopedic specialist, call Call606-598-4529 or talk to your primary care provider.

As a National Health Services Corps site, no one will be denied access to services at AdventHealth Manchester due to an inability to pay. A discounted/sliding fee schedule is available based on family size and income. For more information, please ask at the front desk.
