The da Vinci® Xi surgical system gives our surgeons an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The term “robotic” is often misunderstood. Robots do not perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console.
The da Vinci system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real-time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion. The da Vinci vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area and the instrument size makes it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions.
Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Surgery
- Shorter length of hospital stays for patients
- Patients are less likely to return to the hospital (i.e., readmission)
- Reduced post-surgery pain
- Reduced medication needed due to reduced pain
- Faster recovery times and return to normal activities for patients
- Higher patient satisfaction
- Reduced complication rates

Nina Harkhani, MD Director of Robotic Surgery at AdventHealth
Nina Harkhani, MD is a board-certified urologist and Director of Robotic Surgery at AdventHealth Hendersonville. In addition to offering general urology services, Dr. Harkhani started the robotics program at AdventHealth Hendersonville, which has grown to provide a multi-disciplinary robotics program. She has experience using the Intuitive da Vinci Si and Xi platforms, offering a minimally invasive option for treating urologic conditions. She also has extensive experience in penile implant procedures for erectile dysfunction, offering multiple surgical options for implants. Additional implant expertise includes the placement of artificial urinary sphincter implants for urinary incontinence and placement of sacral neuromodulators (InterStim and Axonics) for bladder control. Dr. Harkhani offers high-end stone surgery, being one of the only urologists in the region to offer tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (tubeless PCNL) and Endoscopic Combined Intra-Renal Surgery (ECIRS) for complex kidney stones. In addition to surgery, Dr. Harkhani offers nonoperative treatment plans including active surveillance for certain cancers, behavioral therapy, physical therapy, and medications. Her goal is to help patients understand the details of their condition to empower them to share in the decision-making process, thus formulating a treatment plan that is tailored to each patient.
Before joining AdventHealth Hendersonville, Dr. Harkhani attended medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. She then completed an internship in general surgery and residency in urologic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center where she received specialized training in da Vinci robotic surgery, penile implant surgery, and tubeless PCNL.
