Strong winds and pounding rain doesn’t have to be frightening and stressful. If you and your loved ones ever get stuck inside during a storm, there are things you can do to pass the time and feed your soul.

For severe storms, you should always be aware of local warnings, but there’s no reason to sit in silence as the storm runs its course. Even if you lose power, it’s an ideal time to have some fun and get things done. Here are 10 ideas to help you feel whole the next time there’s a storm.

Build a Campsite

A power outage during a storm can be scary for children, so keep them distracted by building a fort or putting up a tent for indoor camping. By changing a normal environment, you’re creating a fun diversion the whole family can enjoy.

Clean Out Your Closet

If you’re stuck inside, make the most of it by organizing your closet. Go through your clothing and make a pile to keep and a pile to donate. Decluttering your closet, or any room of your house, is good for the soul and can keep your mind off the weather.
Create a Gratitude Journal

Take turns writing down what you’re grateful for and share them. Similar to sharing your stories, it could be a very profound experience that strengthens your family’s bond.

Get Some Rest

Assuming the weather conditions aren’t dangerous or distracting, now is the perfect time to catch up on sleep. When the power is out, you aren’t distracted by doing another load of laundry or checking social media. Take this time to let your mind wander and just relax.

Play a Board Game

When was the last time you played a truly competitive game of checkers or had a marathon Monopoly session? Board games are an ideal cure for boredom and will make time fly by. You may even keep playing once the power comes back on.

Have a Healthy Treat

Make it a family challenge to come up with a healthy treat made from only pantry items. See what each family members creates and make it a fun contest.

Play Cards

Bridge. Go Fish. Solitaire. Euchre. Nothing is more fun (and passes the time) like a competitive game of Uno or teaching your children how to play your favorite board game.

Read a Book

Reading can be a calming and productive way to pass the time. If the power’s out, grab a candle or flashlight and get lost in a good book.
Share Stories

There’s no better time to catch up with your loved ones than during a storm. Tell your children stories from the past, or have everyone share a favorite memory from a vacation or holiday. Reflection is good for the soul, and you’ll cherish these conversations for years to come.

Write a Letter

Now is the perfect time to sit down and write a letter to someone special using pen and paper. Trust us, someone out there will appreciate it.
