Myomectomy is a surgical procedure for removing symptomatic fibroid tumors from a woman’s uterus. While almost always benign, these tumors can cause excessive menstrual bleeding, pain, pressure and other problems. Depending on the patient’s individual condition, personal preferences and other considerations, a myomectomy may be performed using a hysteroscopic, laparoscopic or abdominal (“open”) approach. A hysteroscopic approach requires no external incisions, while a laparoscopic approach provides for minimal scarring and blood loss with very small external incisions. Specially trained surgeons with the most advanced equipment at their disposal may also provide robotic myomectomy, wherein computer-assisted instruments are employed to minimize incisions while providing for greater flexibility to maneuver surgical instruments.
