Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that results in recurrent abscesses or inflammatory lesions, open sores and sometimes scarring. The condition is marked by the presence of red, inflamed abscesses which are usually extremely tender. These lesions can enlarge, break open and drain purulent discharges. Hidradenitis suppurativa is considered a severe form of acne and occurs deep in the skin around the oil (sebaceous) glands and hair follicles. It can affect the groin and the armpits, which are the main locations of the sweat glands. Treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa may include laser hair removal, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressant medication and oral retinoid medication.
