Compression therapy aims to increase blood flow in the legs and feet through the use of compression stockings. In patients with chronic venous disease, the stockings add vein support, reduce swelling and aid in healing wounds in the lower body. A patient may require compression therapy when they have injured or undergone surgery on one of their legs; when they are significantly overweight; when they have experienced blood clots in their veins; or when they are facing a long period of physical inactivity (such as on a long airplane flight). Before prescribing compression therapy, your physician will need to determine the degree to which your blood flow is impaired and the appropriate amount of compression to apply. From there, he or she can recommend one or more of a variety of stocking types to meet your needs.
