All too often, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain and other vaginal or pelvic floor issues are assumed to be part of the natural aging process. But that doesn’t have to be the case.
Urogynecology brings the gynecology and urology specialties together to help women find answers to their health issues. Our urogynecology doctors are here to help you understand what changes are happening in your body and, most importantly, get you back to enjoying your life with confidence.
Our team offers diagnosis, treatment and management of many urogynecology symptoms and conditions.
Urinary Incontinence
There are varying types of incontinence, and each has its own causes. Our urogynecology specialists will work closely with you to understand your symptoms. Common symptoms of incontinence include:
- Difficulty emptying your bladder
- Frequent urination
- Leaking urine
- Overactive bladder
Based on your initial conversation with your doctor, we’ll order diagnostic tests to diagnose your condition accurately. Then, once your care team better understands what’s causing your urinary incontinence, we’ll create a plan that helps you get back to the life you love.
Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain in women is more common than many people realize. We take care to identify and treat the unique cause(s) of your pelvic pain.
One of the most common causes is weakening pelvic floor muscles. As women age, the muscles in the pelvis become looser. This can cause many issues and conditions, including:
- Fecal incontinence
- Frequent urination
- Overactive bladder
- Painful urination
- Pelvic floor dysfunction
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Prolapsed bladder
- Rectovaginal fistula
- Urethral diverticulum

- Urinary retention
- Urinary tract infections
- Vaginal bulging
- Vaginal infections
- Vaginal mesh complications
- Vesicovaginal fistula
Whatever your diagnosis, take comfort in the wide range of treatment options available to you today. From pelvic floor therapy to minimally invasive surgical approaches and much more, we’ll help you find the answers you need.

Let’s Find Answers Together
As your partner in health care, we’re here to answer your questions about common women’s health conditions like endometriosis, heavy bleeding and urinary tract infections (UTIs) so you can be informed and empowered.
- Understanding Endometriosis
- Endometriosis Symptoms
- Endometriosis Treatment
- Heavy Bleeding
- Treating Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Endometriosis is a common condition that causes the endometrium (the tissue that lines the uterus) to grow outside the uterus, most commonly affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes or tissue in the pelvis.
Normally, the endometrium in your uterus thickens during your menstrual cycle. Then, it breaks down and exits the body during your cycle. The endometrium that grows outside your uterus also hardens during your cycle but is unable to leave the body. This causes irritation, scar tissue and adhesions that can become very painful.
There are many symptoms of endometriosis. Some women may experience mild symptoms, while others experience more severe endometriosis symptoms and pain. Other symptoms include:
- Bloating or nausea (especially during menstrual periods)
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Heavy bleeding between periods
- Heavy periods
- Infertility
- Pain during intercourse
- Painful bowel movements or urination
- Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
- Pelvic pain
There are several effective treatments for endometriosis to help ease your pain and, if desired, improve your fertility. Your doctor may discuss one or more of these endometriosis treatments:
- Fertility treatments
- Hormone therapy
- Hysterectomy for endometriosis
- Pain medication
Heavy menstrual bleeding can be caused by many different conditions or issues, including endometriosis, endocrine disorders or menorrhagia.
Menorrhagia is a very heavy period that lasts more than seven days. Heavy bleeding during a period is defined as needing to change a pad or tampon after two hours or less or if you pass blood clots the size of a quarter or larger. If you’re experiencing heavy bleeding, you should see your doctor to help identify possible heavy period causes, which may include:
- Bleeding-related disorders
- Hormone-related disorders
- Liver, kidney or thyroid disease
- Uterine-related issues
Talk to your doctor about your heavy periods if you experience a sudden heavy period, regular heavy menstrual bleeding or heavy bleeding between your periods.
Most women experience urinary tract infections (UTIs) at some point in their lives. A UTI occurs when bacteria get into the urinary tract. It can affect any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Some UTI symptoms include:
- Blood in urine
- Feeling tired, shaky or confused
- Fever
- Foul-smelling urine
- Frequent urination
- Painful urination (including a burning sensation)
- Pressure in the lower abdomen
- Urine that looks dark, milky or cloudy
Fortunately, UTIs are easily treated with antibiotics, but diagnosing your infection before it spreads or causes serious complications is important. Be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor if you experience any of these common UTI symptoms in women.
