The marketing department of Manchester Memorial Hospital (MMH) was onsite at Red Bird Mission School on May 17 for a prize distribution amongst the winners of the Walking Warriors program.
The Walking Warriors program was conceived and developed by the marketing department at Manchester Memorial Hospital (MMH) to assist local schools and healthcare agencies in tackling childhood obesity, with the pilot launched at Red Bird Mission School in 2017. The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s, said Hurriyat Ghayyur, director of marketing at the hospital. Through this program, we have tried to inculcate a more active lifestyle in the students, which will empower them to lead better and healthier lives.
A total of 56 students participated in the program for 8 weeks. Along with introducing walking within their schedules, the students were required to keep daily logs of time walked each week. Based on the results, Andy Monga, a freshman, was declared the winner and was gifted an $100 gift card by Randy Craft. Andy walked for nearly 110 hours during his exercise program.
One of the highlights of this pilot project was the enthusiasm the staff at Red Bird Mission showed during participation of the program. Twenty-six employees took the challenge of losing percentage of body weight and the winner was Meredith Asher, who was gifted a $100 gift card by the hospital. She lost 8.1% body weight. Sylvester Nolan lost 5.6% of body weight and Candace Collins lost 4.8% body weight. Congratulations to the winners!
