ORANGE CITY, Fla., October 2, 2018 More than 50 community members attended a free seminar, Healthy Colon Presentation and Cooking Demonstration, at AdventHealth Fish Memorial on Sept. 20.
Board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Mihir Patel shared several statistics about colon cancer, including the fact that it is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths.
Age, ethnicity, family history (genetic conditions) are risk factors that cannot be changed. However, some risk factors for colon cancer are within our control, such as: smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. A diet high in red and/or processed meats, especially those cooked at very high temperatures (frying, broiling, grilling) can also potentially increase the risk of developing colon cancer.
Colon cancer is common, and its a real risk for all of us, said Patel. The disease carries good prognosis if it is detected at an early stage, so colon cancer screening is crucial. Get screened. Do it for yourself, do it for your loved ones!
Following Patel's presentation, AdventHealth Fish Memorial executive chef Danny Carrico gave a cooking demonstration. Attendees enjoyed lemon-pepper salmon with Bartlett pear salsa while Carrico provided live step-by-step instructions, so guests could prepare the meal at home.
A lot of people think heart-healthy food is bland, but that doesn't have to be the case, Carrico said. Using fresh, high-quality ingredients, you can prepare delicious and nutritious meals right at home.
