FLORIDA HOSPITAL TAMPA UROLOGIC SURGEON COMPLETES FIRST ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION DEVICE RESEARCH STUDY OF ITS KIND
New biomechanical comparison of inflatable penile implants published in Journal of Sexual Medicine
TAMPA, FL (JULY 19, 2018) A recent study by Jared J. Wallen MD et. al. compared differences between commonly used inflatable penile prostheses (IPPs) and their ability to restore erectile capacity, using cadavers. Dr. Wallen is a Florida Hospital Physician Group Urologic Surgeon at Florida Hospital Tampa. The research findings were published in the July 2018 issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. To date, this is the first and only research study known to test inflatable penile implants in a biomechanical testing environment in cadavers.
The Journal of Sexual Medicine is the official journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and the North American Society of Sexual Medicine, providing healthcare leaders in the field of sexual health and medicine with essential education and an exchange of scientific information generated from experimental and clinical research.
The goal of the study was to evaluate performance of available medical device options in a simulation environment that allowed researchers to compare different aspects of each device within the context of human tissue. Understanding notable differences in terms of how each performed can serve as a guide for physicians during device selection for patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) undergoing penile prosthesis.
Surgical implants can successfully restore erectile function when pills, and other treatments aren't viable options, says Jared J. Wallen, MD. Understanding the differences in performance characteristics of the available devices on the market can only improve the treatment plans and care options we can offer. Surgical placement of inflatable penile prosthesis can completely restore erectile function.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as many as 30 million American men suffer from ED. Erectile dysfunction may be caused by another physical condition such as heart disease, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, diabetes, prior surgery, nerve damage or trauma.
Dr. Wallen advises anyone who suffers from ED to seek medical treatment for their symptoms. And men need to know they not only have options, but long-lasting, effective solutions.
