DELAND, Fla., April 4, 2017, On March 30, nearly 100 community members joined Florida Hospital DeLand for a behind-the-scenes look at the hospital's surgical area.
The 164-bed hospital recently completed a $4 million construction project to renovate all six of the operating rooms, enlarging the suites and adding advanced new technology.
Attendees toured through this new area and spoke with several of Florida Hospital DeLand's top physicians about the latest surgical procedures and technology.
The tour included the pre-operative unit, two operating suites and the endoscopy room, which is a nonsurgical suite used primarily to examine a patients digestive tract.
In the operating suites, pulmonologist Dr. Christopher DiBello and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mark Hollmann displayed several of the instruments and discussed the various equipment they typically use during their procedures.
DiBello showcased the bronchial navigation and bronchial thermoplasty technologies. Florida Hospital DeLand's bronchial navigation system helps physicians detect lung cancer earlier and without the need for multiple hospital visits for diagnostic procedures. The hospital's bronchial thermoplasty technology treats severe, persistent asthma, a condition that affects almost 25 million Americans.
With a mannequin displayed in the operating suite, set up for a knee operation, Hollmann showed guests the specialized equipment and tools used during knee replacements.
Down the hall in the endoscopy room, gastroenterologist Dr. Martin Prado discussed the detection and treatment of tumors in the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, and pancreas. He also showed guests how polyps can be removed before they become cancerous.
