Treating the Whole Person

Naturopathic medicine is an approach to health care that uses natural, non-toxic therapies to treat the whole person and encourage the self-healing process. Naturopathic Doctors (ND) often work alongside your conventional medical team to help uncover underlying causes of your ailments. Consulting with an ND can help provide the “whys” in regards to chronic health complaints for individuals of all ages.

We’re here to help you find the right physician or a location that’s convenient for you.

What to Expect

The first visit consists of gathering information pertaining to your health history, including family history, social history, stress, diet, sleep habits and physical activity. It’s always a good idea to review your family’s health history prior to the appointment and bring a list of all current medications with dosages. Please plan for the first visit to last one hour and follow-up visits to last 30 minutes.

In addition to discussing your medical history, a physical exam and recommended lab work may be performed. Lab tests could include adrenal testing, food allergy panels, stool analysis, neurotransmitter levels and blood nutrient analysis.

Once a detailed history is complete and lab work reviewed, Dr. Schlick will customize a comprehensive treatment strategy.

A treatment plan could consist of the following:

  • Customized dietary recommendations
  • Hormone balancing using nutritional and herbal medicine
  • Stress management strategies including breathe work and natural therapies
  • Detox protocols
  • Homeopathic recommendations
  • Weight loss interventions
  • Education, support and resources
  • Specialty referrals as needed.

We believe in the importance of an integrative medical team. Our providers speak the language of conventional medicine and can involve your primary care physician on all aspects of treatment.

What is Our Role in Your Health Care?

Megan Schlick, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND), earned her doctorate degree from Bastyr University, an accredited four-year naturopathic medicine school in Seattle, Wash. NDs combine the science of modern medicine with traditional, natural therapies to give your body the best opportunity for health and healing. Instead of simply treating the symptoms of disease, holistic medicine looks at your health in the bigger picture, getting to the root of what’s causing illness and applying therapies to help the body heal itself.

Schlick treats most medical conditions for patients of all ages and stages of health. Although trained in the use of prescription drugs, Schlick only prescribes natural medicines, like vitamins, minerals and herbs, to aid in the healing process. However, because medicine is a collaborative effort, Schlick complements the care you are already receiving from your primary care provider or other specialists and will happily work with your health care providers to ensure the appropriate path to wellness.

Ultimately, holistic medicine is a different way of looking at how our bodies function. We work with you to determine what lifestyle, environmental or nutritional factors might be impacting your health and help you to create internal and external environments that will allow you to be your best self.

Learn About Dietary Supplements as an Alternative Treatment

At AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Health Holistic Care, we believe in the power of dietary supplements and their ability to help support your body. Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs and other natural substances.

Why take a dietary supplement?

We know that a good diet and healthy lifestyle practices play the most important role in supporting your health. However, supplements can and do provide a useful and natural way to give your body the support it needs to heal.

Who needs dietary supplements?

The goal is to not need to rely on a daily supplement. But for patients struggling with eating the right foods, dealing with chronic stress, experiencing regular digestive disturbances or suffering with hormonal imbalances, dietary supplements can be a complement to current conventional therapy, or they can serve as a standalone natural treatment. The key is to work with a professional. It starts by contacting Shawnee Mission Health Holistic Care.

Why is it important to talk to a practitioner?

Not all supplements are created equal. It’s important for you to work with a practitioner to understand if there’s a reason you would benefit from the current dietary supplements you are on. Your holistic practitioner will advise you about if the supplement is of good quality and whether it’s providing you with the benefits you need. If not, you most likely will be advised to pursue changes in diet, exercise and sleep habits in addition to taking dietary supplements.

Are there any precautions that should be taken with dietary supplements?

The dietary supplement world is a big business, with many companies not following sound manufacturing practices. Don’t assume a dietary supplement is safe just because it is natural and easy to purchase over the counter. Working with an experienced practitioner is the best way to reduce any potential risk associated with dietary supplements.

Lifestyle Counseling

Lifestyle counseling provides a platform for a patient to discuss what is currently going on in their life that may help uncover the root cause of why they don’t feel well.

What are the benefits of lifestyle counseling?

At AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Holistic Care, there is not a patient visit where lifestyle modification isn’t addressed. Everyone has something they need to improve on, whether it’s getting enough exercise, being too stressed or getting enough sleep. We believe that understanding daily habits and a lifetime of habits can speak volumes as to why a patient may be struggling with their health, so we take the time to listen to each individual’s health story and help each patient find a lifestyle that works best for their own healing.

What kinds of questions are asked during your counseling session?

Our naturopathic doctor will take the time to get to know you and understand from a holistic perspective what might be causing you to not feel your best. In addition to reviewing your past medical history, we’ll ask about factors such as your average hourly sleep, the amount of vegetables you consume in a given day, how often you take a stress-free vacation and how your health was as a child. These questions will help your practitioner hear your story and get a better understanding of your daily habits and lifetime habits, with the goal of identifying why you may be struggling with a current health concern.

What role does stress play in a healthy lifestyle?

It’s important to check in with your stress levels. As you age, stress triggers begin to build. You need to figure out what stress-management technique works for you to help you decrease the negative health aspects of long-term stress. Some stress-reducing techniques may include meditation, nature walks, deep belly breathing, spending time with friends and family, and pursuing enjoyable hobbies.
