Urgent Care or ER: How to Identify an Emergency

When your child breaks an arm, when you experience sudden pain or trouble breathing, when you recognize signs of a stroke — whatever medical emergency you find yourself in, chances are you'll feel shaken and uncertain of what to do next.

Trust your intuition. If you see or experience any symptoms of a medical emergency, call 911 immediately or head to the closest emergency room. Even if you feel uncertain as to whether or not you need Emergency Care, please don't hesitate to visit the 24-hour emergency room at AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach, formerly Florida Hospital New Smyrna. Where your health is concerned, it’s always best to play it safe. We offer emergency medical treatments for many conditions, including:

  • Complicated Fractures
  • Deep Wounds
  • Extreme Difficulty Breathing
  • Major Head Injury
  • Poisoning
  • Severe Allergic Reactions
  • Severe Burns
  • Suspected Heart Attack
  • Suspected Stroke
  • Vomiting or Coughing Up Blood

With a skilled and compassionate approach to care, our highly trained emergency room team can help you find healing when you need it most. Let us serve you — it’s our privilege.

What to Expect When You Visit the ER

We know you have a lot of questions, and we’ll do our best to answer every single one of them. Tell us your concerns. Ask us anything. We’ll also have a few questions for you, because the more information we have about you, the more quickly and safely we can help you. We’ll start with basic information like your name, birth date, medical history, and the reason for your visit. After taking your vital signs, our team will decide how they can bring you relief in the fastest and safest way possible.

In our New Smyrna Beach ER, we use a process known as triage, which prioritizes care for patients in critical condition. That means a patient suffering from a stroke may receive care sooner than someone with less urgent needs.

To make sure you’re prepared for an emergency, you may want to keep an information card in your purse or wallet. Include things like the name and number of your primary care physician, a list of your medications and drug allergies, and any advance directives you may have (like power of attorney or health care proxy). Knowing this information will help us better serve you.
