Moving often means lots of decorating, DIY projects and minor repair jobs as you settle in and make your new house a home. But sometimes, all that handy work causes accidents to happen.
That’s why a well-stocked first aid kit is an essential addition to your new home. Take a few minutes to note what you’ll need to gather now, long before any emergency occurs.
Home First Aid Kit Basics
A first aid kit can be used to treat minor injuries, as well as soothe and stabilize more serious conditions until you can get to an emergency room or urgent care. Some home first aid must-haves include:
- Absorbent compresses
- Antibiotic ointment
- Antiseptic wipes
- Bandages in assorted sizes
- Cold compress
- First aid instruction booklet
- Hand sanitizer
- Hydrogen peroxide (to disinfect)
- Latex gloves
- Oral thermometer
- Over-the-counter pain medicine
- Sterile gauze pads
Check your kit regularly to replenish anything you may have used or removed, and check items’ expiration dates. Ideally, you should have a kit in your home and in your car. Make sure the adults in your family know where the kits are located, but keep them safely out of the reach of children.
Medications to Have On Hand
Make it easy to treat minor illnesses at home by keeping medications on hand that can relieve common symptoms. Check expiration dates before using medicine, and consult your doctor when using multiple medications or if conditions become chronic or more severe.
- Aloe vera gel
- Anti-diarrheal medication
- Calamine lotion
- Cough and cold medication
- Epinephrine, if prescribed by your doctor
- Hydrocortisone cream
- Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
