A day at a theme park is just one part of a great itinerary. Walt Disney World® Resort offers a variety of activities on property to help you stay healthy and active while on vacation, like walking and running trails, fitness classes at the resorts and outdoor activities.
Here, you’ll find some helpful tips to see and enjoy the best places, stay active and have a vacation full of happy memories.
Ways to Prepare for Your Walt Disney World® Resort Vacation
Mind the Weather
Prepare for the Central Florida climate. The rainy season is between June and November, and afternoon rain and thunderstorms are common. Packing an umbrella and a lightweight rain poncho with a hood can save the day and your clothes. Bring those out and head for cover when the thunderclouds gather.
Time of Year
It will likely be hot and humid in the summer months, which can make you feel tired and dehydrated, so listen to your body. Consider a slower pace than you might be used to, and remember that you don't have to see everything in one day. Always keep an insulated water bottle filled with cold water with you, and remember to drink from it often.
Stock up on Healthy Snacks
Healthy nutrition is important every day, but when you need to keep your endurance up, and it’s hot outside, you need to pay extra attention to what you’re eating and drinking. Fueling up before venturing out and throughout the day will give you the energy you need to enjoy your time to the fullest.
Nutritious Foods Are Available
What foods will help you maintain your energy during your big day at Walt Disney World® Resort? It’s best to select snacks that have carbohydrates and protein, and that are low in sugar and fat. Just a few of the healthy options available include:
- Fresh fruit cups and bowls
- Grilled chicken bowl
- Salad
- Trail mix
- Veggies and dip
- Whole-wheat turkey sandwich
Walking and Running Safely at Walt Disney World® Resort
Many of the Disney Resorts Collection hotels and areas around the parks at Walt Disney World® Resort boast spectacular jogging trails and outdoor recreational activities for avid walkers, hikers and runners.
Take Care of Your Feet
During your trip, take special care of your feet and legs. After all, they’re keeping you going as you put in the many steps you’ll take while you’re here.
Avoid blisters by ensuring you have well-fitting, comfortable shoes. Take a good look at your clothing choices, too. In the summertime, look for light-colored, moisture-wicking fabrics and well-ventilated shoes with good support. The best way to avoid discomfort during a trip to Florida is to prepare for the climate and your activities beforehand.
In the Water
While you’re here, besides enjoying the Disney Resorts Collection hotel pools, you can rent a canoe or kayak at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. There are also fishing excursions with guided catch-and-release outings that let you experience bass fishing all year round. For safety, wear a life vest. They are required for children under 12 and recommended for guests of all ages.
Always keep a watchful eye on your little ones and ensure you and your kids avoid running near pools or on other wet surfaces. Stay within quick reach of your children when they are in or near the water.
Other Activities to Help You Stay Active and Well at Walt Disney World® Resort
At Disney Resorts Collection hotels, there’s something for every interest, from tennis and volleyball to golf. Most Resort hotels have great onsite fitness centers and complimentary fitness classes.
Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground: Tri-Circle-D Ranch
Bring your whole family to check out the Tri-Circle-D Ranch, complete with pony, wagon and carriage rides.
Mindful Moments
Remember that you don’t have to be on the go every second of the day, too. Carve out time for mindful moments and peace so you can energize for more activity when you’re ready. You can enjoy nature without having it scheduled or head back to your room for a nap to recharge.
Take some time for some deep breaths, take in all the little details around you and savor the moments of your vacation.
Safety Tips to Help You Stay Cool and Healthy While You Have Fun
Empower yourself with knowledge and be proactive. Follow these tips to avoid heat-related illness:
- Apply your sunscreen often, including to frequently-missed areas.
- Drink plenty of fluids with electrolytes to stay in balance and keep a water bottle with you at all times.
- Alternate indoor and outdoor activities and seek out air-conditioned areas to stay cool.
- Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas when outdoors to allow your body to cool off.
- Wear a hat and lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
