The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization that serves as a voice for health care consumers and purchasers, recently honored AdventHealth with a prestigious Emerald Award. The inaugural Emerald Awards honored two individuals and one organization for extraordinary leadership in patient safety.

The president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group, Leah Binder, commended AdventHealth for receiving the Emerald Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Health Care System:

“AdventHealth hospitals consistently demonstrate role model performance and foster an exceptionally strong culture of safety and accountability across all hospitals,” Binder stated.

This distinction is the first of its kind for a health care system, and it follows more than two dozen AdventHealth hospitals across the country earning an “A” Leapfrog Safety Grade in 2021. Their grading system is peer-reviewed and publicly available for consumers to review.

Fourteen AdventHealth hospitals also received the Top Hospital Award, with rigorous standards met by less than 5% of American hospitals evaluated by Leapfrog.

Binder also noted, “This capstone (Emerald) award is a testament to AdventHealth’s leadership and entire team, and success in perpetuating a culture of patient safety and excellence throughout the system from the top down.”

What Does the Emerald Award Mean for Patients?

The Leapfrog Group collects medical data from hospitals to analyze their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and any potential harm to a patient. That means when you visit one of our facilities, your safety is our top priority. We’re paying attention to details may that go unseen by untrained eyes in order to keep you safe.

Some of the many things we do to keep you healthy and safe are:

  • Administering safe medications
  • Creating an enhanced culture of safety
  • Developing strong communication between staff, patients and families
  • Excelling at hand hygiene procedures
  • Following quality checks to prevent mistakes
  • Preventing complications from surgery
  • Reducing falls, trauma and severe pressure ulcers
  • Reducing infection rates

We’re Humbled by Your Trust

We’re the first and only hospital system to be recognized with an Emerald Award. We believe our performance at each of our individual hospital locations is what collectively makes AdventHealth a unified whole as a system in terms of streamlined, reliable, quality care. The Emerald Award directly reflects our culture of putting patients, families and their safety first.

While we’re honored to receive this recognition, we’re not motivated by accolades. We’re humbled by the trust our patients place in us when they or their loved ones visit an AdventHealth hospital. To us, the value at the heart of effective patient safety is simple: Treat people the way we’d like our own families to be treated.
