An orchiectomy is a surgical procedure in which one or both of the testicles are removed in order to address testicular cancer or to control production of the testosterone hormone for purposes of reducing the symptoms of advanced prostate cancer. In some cases, removal of the testicles can help a tumor to shrink and prolong survival. This operation can be performed on an outpatient basis, with the patient able to return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Men who receive an orchiectomy to address testicular cancer may also need to undergo retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Some patients receive testicular implants following an orchiectomy procedure to help restore a more normal appearance.
