Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes patches of pigment-less skin, hair, insides of the mouth and nose and sometimes even the eyes. This occurs when melanocytes, the cells in our skin, die or stop producing pigmentation. Vitiligo symptoms commonly occur on sun exposed areas first, but can appear on any part of the body. People of all skin types can get vitiligo. Scientists suspect that vitiligo may be caused by an autoimmune condition that targets the skin cells, but are unsure. That said, treatments for the condition are available and focus on evening out skin tone. Your doctor may also be able to make recommendations for slowing the spread of vitiligo symptoms.
