Vaginal repair may refer to one of several procedures for addressing the prolapse (or slippage) of various pelvic organs. Cystocele repair (for a slipped bladder), rectocele repair (for a slipped rectum) and enterocele repair (for a vaginal hernia) all fall under this category. They can be performed with the patient under either general anesthesia or a spinal anesthetic, and generally involve pulling the organ back into its normal position, sewing tears in connective tissue back together, and/or placement of a vaginal mesh material to act as a sling that will hold the organs in place. Vaginal vault suspension may be accomplished through the vagina or via abdominal approach – your doctor will discuss which of these is recommended according to your particular condition.
