Ureteroscopy is an endoscopic procedure for examining the the upper portion of the urinary tract including the ureters and kidneys. Using a long, thin instrument called a uretoscope that is equipped with a tiny camera and light, your urologist is able to detect kidney and ureter stones as well as abnormal growths such as tumors and polyps. He or she will also be able to extract a biopsy sample from the ureter lining or kidney, and can actually remove a suspicious growth when necessary. Sometimes it’s necessary for the urologist to place a temporary stent within a ureter in order to facilitate urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder when inflammation is present. This stent will typically be removed within a week via cystoscopy.
