Podiatric surgeons can perform a variety of procedures to address toe deformities and painful conditions ranging from bone spurs to bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, ganglion cysts, congenital abnormalities, nail problems, benign tumors and warts. Most such surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis, either in the doctor’s office or in a hospital/surgical center setting, with the patient receiving just a local anesthetic. Ingrown toenails are one of the most common toe conditions for which surgery may be required, particularly when they are associated with an infection or injury. In procedures to address problems with the soft tissue (ingrown toenails, warts), laser surgery is sometimes employed. However, when the problem to be addressed involves a bone condition (hammertoe, bunion, bone spur), lasers are not generally used.
