When testicular cancer necessitates the removal of one or more of a man’s testicles, a testicle implant can be provided at the same time as that operation or as an outpatient procedure at some point in the future. Importantly, the implanted prosthetic is for aesthetic purposes only and will not be able to produce sperm or testosterone. The cost of a testicular implant is usually in the range of several thousand dollars and may not be covered by your health insurance, so be sure to do your research on this aspect of the surgery well ahead of time. That said, surgically installing a testicular implant only takes about an hour, and the device can easily be removed if any complications arise. Currently, the only kind of testicular implant that has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration is a prosthesis that is filled with saline and held in place by an elastic silicone shell, though additional options are being researched for future availability.
