Soft palate surgery often refers to the procedure known as UPPP or UP3 (short for the title “uvulopalatopharyngoplasty”). UPPP is one of the most often performed surgical procedures for addressing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea when a patient is unable to use a CPAP machine. It is usually performed in tandem with a tonsillectomy (and possibly an adenoidectomy) and involves both repositioning and removing certain tissues in order to expand a person’s airway. Another form of soft palate surgery is reconstruction of abnormalities of the soft palate for purposes of improving a patient’s speech and/or swallowing capability.
