Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which a person’s legs feel extremely uncomfortable, particularly at night. It is characterized by burning, itching and pain sensations, along with an irresistible urge to move the legs – some patients describe it as feeling as if insects are crawling on them while in bed. The condition can also affect the arms and may occur during the daytime while in an upright position as well. It causes a person to constantly move their legs and/or arms, and can have a dramatic effect on quality of life due to constant sleep disruptions. In women, restless legs often occur during pregnancy but usually disappear afterward. Treatments for restless leg syndrome include heat therapy, leg messages and certain medications.
