Select physician practices employ licensed physical therapists to provide their patients with comprehensive rehabilitation assistance following surgery, stroke, injury or a disease diagnosis. In addition, some physicians are rehabilitative medicine specialists, known as physiatrists. Outpatient rehabilitation services focus on restoring patients’ functions with regard to their strength, balance, coordination and mobility. For post-stroke patients and those with brain injuries, additional services such as occupational and speech therapy may also be provided. Patients can benefit from having a coordinated plan of care that is administered by providers who are all connected by the same practice or physician group.
