Women who experience prolapse of one or more pelvic organs may be candidates for placement of a vaginal pessary, a medical device that is specially designed to provide support to the organs that are slipping out of place. Different kinds of pessaries are available depending on what is the right “fit” for the patient and what kind of pelvic support is needed – whether to address a dropped bladder (cystocele), a prolapsed rectum (rectocele), uterine prolapse, or slippage of the vagina and small intestine (vaginal vault prolapse with enterocele). Women can be taught by their health care provider how to take out and reinsert their pessary device when needed. These soft and flexible devices can be an effective, nonsurgical means of addressing prolapse and related incontinence problems in many women.
