The pericardium is the sac-like membrane that envelops the heart, and when it becomes inflamed and irritated due to an infection, trauma, medication or disease process, this condition is called pericarditis. Symptoms can appear very quickly and may include stabbing pain in the left side of the chest, a low fever, fatigue, dry cough, swelling in the abdomen or legs and shortness of breath - particularly when lying down. Treating pericarditis rarely requires surgery and is usually accomplished with the use of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication, corticosteroids and prescription or over-the-counter pain relievers.
