Nissen fundoplication is a standard surgical procedure for addressing GERD and hiatal hernia symptoms that have not been satisfactorily addressed by medications and other therapies. Named for Dr. Rudolph Nissen who pioneered the approach more than 50 years ago, the operation offers a permanent solution to acid reflux by winding a portion of the stomach around the lower esophagus and securing it there with sutures, thereby reinforcing the strength and closing ability of the lower esophageal sphincter. Stomach contractions will now close off the esophagus rather than causing stomach acid to rush back up into that tube. Nissen fundoplication is primarily performed using a minimally invasive, laparoscopic approach. While an “open” surgical procedure would normally require a hospital stay of up to 10 days, those undergoing laparoscopic surgery may go home after as little as one night in the hospital, with two to three days being the norm.
