A neuroma (also known as Morton’s neuroma) is a thickening of the tissue that surrounds the nerves leading to the toes. Neuromas can develop due to constant pressure on the nerve caused by wearing high heels or running, or from a foot injury. Most neuromas feel as if a pebble is in the shoe or sock, and may be accompanied by sharp pain, burning or numbness in the ball of the foot and the toes. Treatment may include wearing shoes that have more toe room, using shoe inserts that support the arch of the foot and supply extra padding, steroid injections to shrink the tissue, stretching and strengthening exercises, and surgery if conservative treatments don’t relieve symptoms.
