Minimally Invasive Joint Surgery
Minimally invasive surgical techniques are increasingly becoming the standard method for performing hip and knee replacements, but it’s important to understand that these surgeries still involve cutting into bone, realigning tissues around the joint and implanting a prosthesis. The “minimally invasive” approach, called arthroplasty, does allow for smaller incisions and less trauma to soft tissues, thereby providing for a potentially quicker and less painful recovery period than might be the case with a traditional “open” surgery. That said, minimally invasive and open approaches to joint replacement can result in equally good results for the patient. Talk to your doctor about your options if you are in need of surgical replacement of a hip or knee joint.
